The STR has been fighting to get the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. However, this is just one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the evolution of the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their environment, which can cause variations in genes or even whole genomes. Over time, these changes can lead to the emergence new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is called natural selection, which describes the process that allows individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantageous characteristics. This variation in reproduction could, over time, lead to the creation and evolution of new species.
The word “evolution” comes from the Latin word”evolution” which means unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has a myriad of meanings over the years as it has taken shape in the sciences and in other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) believed that the existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck’s embryologist disciple who came up with the term “transmutation” to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term “evolution” from Geoffroy’s student to describe the idea that existing species evolve into different species in an orderly and predictable manner.
Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process through which living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of surviving or conceiving offspring. Over time the genetic variability could lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological traits in the population. Natural selection is the process that drives most evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolution since they aren’t passed on to the next generation.
Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial, even though it has been proven to be valid by a multitude of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They argue that the concept should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their fight to remove evolution from high-school textbooks which includes the removal of references to the evolutionary origins of humans as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestral bird’s parent.
Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?
Evolution explains how the Earth and all living species evolved. It is also a fundamental part of biology and helps scientists to learn how living organisms function and develop. Evolution also shows the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution to better comprehend nature and make important discoveries, such as the development of new treatments.
The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so much about the universe and life on this planet, and it has been thoroughly tested and confirmed over a long period of time. Many people, including religious leaders, are in support of the scientific theory. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology isn’t in interfere with religious beliefs since it only addresses physical objects, events, and processes.
Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their convictions. For example some Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans share an ancestral connection with other animals.
It is crucial that science educators advocate for the teaching evolution. Unfortunately, in a few nations around the world the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made some progress in some states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the removal of textbooks on the evolution of horses and the bird ancestral Archaeopteryx.
It is important to remember, however, that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, such as fossils, genetics, and even the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.
The majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. This support is based on various reasons. Scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries, such as the development of new medicines, while others do so to improve the lives of animals and plant species, mostly to benefit of humans. Some scientists are simply curious, whereas others have an intense faith in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God’s word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. Many creationists are Christians However, not all. Creationists are typically divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is literal, and that the universe and life on Earth began only recently.
OECs are not as well-known, but they are as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old, and they believe that evolution is an untruth.
Both forms of creationism deny the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life began on Earth. They assert that evolution is impossible, because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern science shunned miracles in fear that they could lose their credibility.
Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution and special creation and call their view “theistic evolution.” This is also known as “continuous evolutionism” or the “evolution of species created.” In this belief system, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event known as the Great Flood. They believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and then gradually evolved. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis, and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.
In general, creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. This position is supported by numerous professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some scientists and educational institutions are more flexible and allow for the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curriculum.
What is Creationism?
When people think about creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their books. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. STR has achieved its first victory by removing examples of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. The focus is now on the removal of excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch research and on human evolution too.
STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and members. The goal, according to STR is to clear the world of what it calls “atheist materialism” which paints an image of students as being negative. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of trainees in biology found that half did not believe evolution. The root causes are unclear but could be due to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists in the country.
The KACR has achieved a number of things in the past through seminars and lectures. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was a textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. It sparked interest among college communities. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught until today.
On August 6-7, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR’s John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science in major seminaries too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
